As I looked at the picture on my computer and converted it to black and white I thought about my words for the year, trust and rest and their relationship to worship. I remembered this quote from Tim Keller's devotion book on the Psalms for August 18, "Only through worship are we restored to vigor from the exhaustion and burnout of seeing our own glory." Worship has a single focus, praising God - taking our eyes off ourselves and only looking at him. We must have as the Psalmist says in Psalm 86:11, an undivided heart.
Teach me your way, O Lord, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart that I may fear your name."
It is when we truly worship God with a single focus that we find rest as I found beauty in that single tree. We need to take things out of our lives, things that we have made into idols. I am coming to understand that rest, true rest, is not just the absence of work, but worshiping God with a single focus.
