But as for me, I shall walk in my integrity;
redeem me, and be gracious to me.
My foot stands on level ground;
in the great assembly I will bless the Lord.
I am reading a wonderful devotion book by Tim Keller, "The Songs of Jesus: A Year of Daily Devotions in the Psalms." In this Psalm David expresses his love for praising God on the level ground of the temple. The temple of God for David was a safe place. This image of Cades Cove came to my mind as I thought of level ground, this beautiful cove surrounded by mountains. I think we all want to stand on level ground, sure and steady. Sometimes it isn't easy to find; we grow tired and weary. We seek to walk in integrity like David. But even in our failures, God is gracious and redeems us. He gives us the level ground on which to stand. A safe place, surrounded by his love and grace.
I was reminded of an old gospel hymn, Higher Ground. May these words be our prayer.
I want to scale the utmost height
And catch a gleam of glory bright;
But still I’ll pray till rest I’ve found,
“Lord, lead me on to higher ground.”
Lord, lift me up, and let me stand
By faith on heaven's tableland;
A higher plane than I have found,
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
