Here is a short video about the book that provides some very interesting ideas from Every Good Endeavor
Powershot G12 This week I am going to back to work after a very long break. Yesterday I worked in the lab. This is not something that I enjoy but something that has to be done. There is very little creativity to that task. But today I worked on creating lessons for my course. I enjoy this part of teaching. It involves thinking about goals and creating activities to meet those goals that will engage my students and get them to start thinking like teachers. Powershot G12 In the past year I have thought a lot about work and its place. It is so easy to loose sight of why we are working and balance working with other things in our lives. We all work for different reasons, the basic one is to meed basic needs. But in our culture and indeed in any culture there are many more reasons for work. I think it is very easy to take our identity from work, resulting in a ceaseless, stressful strive for perfection. We are trying to earn respect, to be good enough, to belong. I was very excited to learn that one my favorite authors, Timothy Keller, had just published about work, Every Good Endeavor. I finished it yesterday. I have learned a lot but I think I will need to read it again to really get it. One of his main points was that there is always a work beneath work, a story so to speak about why we work the way we do. For a Christian our story or world view should change the way we work. This doesn't mean that we only work for a church or a Christian business. It is more about how we work. We no longer are working for approval or for our identity, for our value and worth comes from Christ who loves us so. If you struggle with the role of work in our life, I encourage you to read this book with me as I re-read it.
