So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
This verse is so familiar and simple that we sometimes don't think about what it really means. We just read it as part of the creation story - God made man. But if you really stop and think about it, this verse is astounding. In my pastor's sermon this morning he asked a question that I have been thinking about for a while - what does it mean to be made in the image of God. To answer the question we have to think about the characteristics of God: love, forgiveness, faithfulness, beauty, free, creative. I have told my students many times that they can't tell me they are not creative because they are made in the image of the Great Creator.
